Life of Captain Marvel #1 (of 5)

James' Pick

Writer: Margaret Stohl
Artist: Marguerite Savage, Carlos Pacheco
Inker: Rafael Fonteriz
Colorist: Marcio Menyz
Letterer: VC's Clayton Cowles

THE DEFINITIVE ORIGIN OF CAPTAIN MARVEL! Carol Danvers was just a girl from the Boston suburbs who loved science and the Red Sox until a chance encounter with a Kree hero gave her incredible super-powers. Now, she's a leader in the Avengers and the commander of Alpha Flight. But what if there were more to the story? When crippling anxiety attacks put her on the sidelines in the middle of a fight, Carol finds herself reliving memories of a life she thought was far behind her. You can't outrun where you're from - and sometimes, you HAVE to go home again. But there are skeletons in Captain Marvel's closet - and what she discovers will change her entire world. Written by best-selling author Margaret Stohl and drawn by fan-favorite comics veteran Carlos Pacheco, this is the true origin of Captain Marvel.

Carol Danvers is not necessarily an open book but we do know about her past. About her military background. Her powers. Her love of her kitty. But her home life, though touched on here-and-there, has been a little more of a secret. But secrets, especially ones you hide deep down, can come back and haunt you.

Come by and pick up Life of Captain Marvel #1 (of 5) and see another side of Captain Marvel. One that we never could have expected.

Death is like outer space-a seemingly unknowable, terrifying blackness that yields beautiful discoveries and truths-if only you've got the right kind of rocketship. Thalia Rosewood has had a lifelong obsession with death, keeping her from living her life to the fullest. Mercy Wolfe has a brain tumor the size of a billiard ball, and a need for a new recruit before her next journey begins. Inigo Hanover is a reluctant tether to the world beyond, seeking to continue a cycle that exploration would halt. Go toward the light. Then go beyond. EUTHANAUTS.

There is a place... Just beyond the veil. A place that science cannot explain. Nor religion. A place where death and life intersect. And that is where this tale lies. Within that world. Within those times.

Explore the mysteries and wonder of the Frost in this oversized debut issue by Eisner-winning writer Sean Kelley McKeever (Mystique), artist Alexandre Tefenkgi, and colorist Jean-Francois Beaulieu (I Hate Fairyland).

The farthest point in the universe. A long time from now. There is a world. Frozen. But life survives. It is difficult. Each person has their place. But... They survive! For how much longer, though? Gideon Falls #1

Heather's Pick

Writer: Jeff Lemire
Art: Andrea Sorrentino
Colors: Dave Stewart
Letter: Steve Wands

A brand-new ongoing series from the acclaimed bestselling creative team of Old Man Logan and Green Arrow! The lives of a reclusive young man obsessed with a conspiracy in the city's trash, and a washed-up Catholic priest arriving in a small town full of dark secrets, become intertwined around the mysterious legend of The Black Barn, an otherworldly building that is alleged to have appeared in both the city and the small town, throughout history, bringing death and madness in its wake. Rural mystery and urban horror collide in this character-driven meditation on obsession, mental illness, and faith.

A shadow has fallen on a small town. The Black Barn has appeared and the omen can only bring about death. Will the confluence of events that happen around the small town bring destruction or is it merely fate that will bring blood? When it comes to suspense. Conspiracy. Mystery. Gideon Falls from Image Comics is an absolute must. Issue #1 is here!

It is also... Sold out! The series is so good that we could not keep it on the racks. If you were not able to grab a copy while we had it, come in and make a pre-order. The 2nd Print will be available on April 4th.

Gwenpool #25

James' Pick

Writer: Christopher Hastings
Artist: Gurihiru
Letterer: Clayton Cowles

LOST IN THE PLOT PART 2. Gwen's future page count is running low but her thirst for super hero fun and adventure is as high as ever! What better time than the present to knock off "join the Avengers" from her bucket list?

We cannot believe it either, True Believers! But this is it. Gwen "Gwenpool" Poole's Final issue. (Or so they say...) The final issue is not about the end but about the times we spent with Gwen and all the possible futures in which we will see her again. And again. And again. This may be her last issue. But this will not be the last time we see her. Nor the last time we read about her. Gwenpool will always be in our hearts and living happily on our bookshelves!

Heather's Pick

The Wilds #1

Heather's Pick

Writer: Vita Ayal
Artist: Emily Pearson
Colorist: Marissa Louise

After a cataclysmic plague sweeps across America, survivors come together to form citystate-like communities for safety. Daisy Walker is a Runner for The Compound, a mix of post-apocalyptic postal service and black market salvaging operation. It is a Runner's job to ferry items and people between settlements, and on occasion scavenge through the ruins of the old world. Daisy is the best there is at what she does. Out beyond the settlement walls are innumerable dangers: feral animals, crumbling structures, and Abominations - those that were touched by the plague and became something other. After a decade of surviving, Daisy isn't phased by any of it - until her lover, another Runner named Heather, goes missing on a job. Desperate to find her, Daisy begins to see that there may be little difference between the world inside the walls and the horrors beyond. From writer Vita Ayala (Bitch Planet: Triple Feature) and Emily Pearson (Cult Classic) with colors by Marissa Louise (Spell On Wheels) and covers by Natasha Alterici (Heathen), comes this bold tale of surviving in bleak times.

There are many stories in which the world is lost. But few that talk about the world after. When the pieces have started to fit back together. People have jobs, are parts of communities and creating families. They are living their lives. Daisy's part in the community may be a little more treacherous but she lives it daily and to the best of her ability. And her ability is the Best! But not even the best can be prepared for all dangers. Especially those that hide outside of the safe walls of The Compound. #1 of this new series from Black Mask will keep you on the edge of your seat. Come by and grab a copy of The Wilds now!

Just two this week, but there are many, many other great titles on the racks! Come by and we can talk to you about all the titles that you should be reading.

Katie's Pick

Hungry Ghosts #1

Katie's Pick

On a dark, haunted night, a Russian oligarch dares a circle of international chefs to play the samurai game of 100 Candles-where each storyteller spins a terrifying tale of ghosts, demons and unspeakable beings-and prays to survive the challenge. Inspired by the Japanese Edo period game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, Hungry Ghosts reimagines the classic stories of yokai, yorei, and obake, all tainted with the common thread of food. First course: With bad consequence, a ramen chef refuses to help a beggar, and a band of pirates get more (and less) than they were bargaining for after their encounter with a drowning woman turns ghastly. Hungry Ghosts is cooked up by the infamous author and chef, Anthony Bourdain (Emmy-Award winning TV star of Parts Unknown) and acclaimed novelist Joel Rose (back again from their New York Times #1 best seller, Get Jiro!). Joining them this issue are stellar artists Alberto Ponticelli (Second Sight) and Vanesa Del Rey (Redlands), with amazing color by Jose Villarrubia, and a drop-dead cover by Paul Pope (Batman Year 100).

Famed... Or In-famed? Chef and world traveler, Anthony Bourdain loves to tell stories. From prose to comics, Bourdain sits at the top of the New York Times bestsellers lists. His new story, one of the first line of books from the exciting to Berger Books line from Dark Horse, is a must pick-up.

Heather's Pick

Flash Annual #1

But when Magenta, Wally's old love, needs his help, the Flash returns home to Keystone City where he is confronted with violent memories of an unknown world...A major turning point for the Flash family that sets the path for earth shattering stories in 2018!

Joshua Williamson (Nailbiter) and Christian Duce (Detective Comics Rebirth) are about to take the DC world by storm. Or maybe more by Speed Force? The Flash War is about to begin. But before we jump in, we need to look back at how the Rebirth all began. Wally still has not confronted certain aspects of his life and he needs Barry's help. But... Of course... If it was only as easy as a simple decision and nothing ever interfered... Well... It wouldn't be a very long issue, now would it? The Flash Annual #1 is out now, come by and grab a copy of your very own.

LT Wilson Jericho, disgraced from his position above ground and now an officer in the sewer police, thinks he knows everything there is to know about what lies beneath. But scientist Sandra Yeatman is determined to discover the truth behind the legends, and something is threatening to crawl out and rip the city apart...

Titan Comics' new two part miniseries is deep. Or, should we say, deep underneath! There are some surprising creatures right under our feet... And we do not even know it. Creators Christophe Bec (Sanctum) and Stefano Raffaele (Hawkeye) bring us the mysteries within the darkness and... What terrors could come if that darkness reaches the surface. Come by and grab Under #1.

The Wicked + The Divine Christmas Annual #1

Katie's Pick

Jamie [McKelvie] (Young Avengers, Phonogram) said "It's a shame we never saw any of the gods' early funtimes," and Kieron [Gillen] (also the... Young Avengers and Phonogram...) said "Yeah," and then they looked at each other, and then called all their talented friends to do a Christmas album of (mostly) fan service! Inanna and Baal getting it on! Lucifer and Sakhmet getting it on! Dionysus giving Baphomet a lift in a crappy car! And more! This one has it all.

Now... When the creators said that they wanted to bring together some of their friends and create a Wic+Div "Christmas album of (mostly) fan service", they meant it! Though we would not suggest Wic+Div for anyone under 18, this issue takes the fan service cake. In this (*cough*) exciting (*cough*) Holiday issue, you will see how the young, freshly made Pantheon played around. Wink. Wink. Come in and grab The Wicked + The Divine Christmas Annual #1 today.

There are so many new titles! So many extraordinary reads and we are here to suggest our favorites. Check out this week's Amazing Staff Picks!

Heather' Pick

Mister Miracle #1

Heather's Pick

From the team behind The Sheriff of Babylon and the Hugo Award-nominated writer of Vision comes a unique new take on one of Jack Kirby's most beloved New Gods.
Scott Free is the greatest escape artist that ever lived. So great that he escaped Granny Goodness' gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, the former female fury known as Big Barda. Using the stage alter ego of Mister Miracle, he has made a career for himself showing off his acrobatic escape techniques. He even caught the attention of the Justice League, which counted him among its ranks.
You might say Scott Free has everything...so why isn't it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick - except one. He has never escaped death. Is it even possible? Our hero is going to have to kill himself if he wants to find out.

Writer Tom King (Batman - Rebirth) and artist Mitch Gerads (Punisher) really hit the ground sprinting. (Yup, they raced way past "running".) Mister Miracle exposes a brittle side of the New God and what it takes to stand up, even when you are at your weakest moments, when faced against unimaginable odds. Mister Miracle #1 is filled with punch-in-the-gut emotion that makes it so easy to flip from page-to-page that you do not even realize you have been sucked in. You really... REALLY need to come in and grab a copy of your own!

That is... If we were not already sold out... If you missed the first round, do not fret. We are currently taking pre-orders for the 2nd prints!

Katie's Pick

Redlands #1

Katie's Pick

A brand-new horror book from the minds of Eisner Award-winner JORDIE BELLAIRE (Pretty Deadly) and critically acclaimed artist VANESA R. DEL REY (Scarlet
Witch
) brings you to the sleepy, sunny town of Redlands, Florida. The police are failing to maintain control of their old-fashioned town, and a coven of killer witches plan to take everything from them. This summer, hide your bibles.

There are places all over the world... Drenched in darkness. And sometimes that darkness, that classic human darkness, needs to be wiped clean. Made anew. Bellaire put out a letter (not the one in the back of the book) that stated that Redlands was her way of getting out her emotions. Of letting lose the flood gates, so to speak. And, by every definition, Redlands is exactly that. The book is magic, freedom, wickedness and emotion all rolled together. It is so good, in fact, both Heather and Katie are suggesting it. So you know you need to come in and grab it!

BONUS SUGGESTION: Katie has had Kill or Be Killed, by Ed Brubaker (W) and Sean Phillips (A), as her Staff Pick in the past. Well... Volume 2 is out and it is waiting to go home with you!

James's Pick

Ms. Marvel #21

James's Pick

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer - a familiar adage for a veteran hero like Ms. Marvel. But when Kamala discovers that one of her old friends has joined forces with her enemies, things get a LOT more complicated...

When you are a Hero, especially a young Hero, often the most challenging battles are not those fought on the streets against a dangerous villain. But those battles fought inwards, between those whom you believed you were close to. Your colleagues, companions or family. But if you found out that one of them had betrayed you... What would you do? When Kamala is faced with these difficult life questions will she do what is right in the name of Justice? Or will she do what is best for her friendship?

Do we really need to sell you on G. Willow Wilson's (A-Force) young Heroine that has literally taken the Comics World by storm? Do we? Ms. Marvel is phenomenal and you should be reading it! No questions. You SHOULD be reading it! RIGHT NOW!

Do you need more titles? Come in to the store and we will happily hand you more and more great reads. But, for now... TTNF and Ta-Ta 'till next week!

Since the pink fan-girl entered the Marvel Comic Universe, Gwenpool has made one hell of an impression. But the fun has yet only begun. The Venom Symbiote was dangerous enough on its own. But could you even imagine Gwenpool getting her hands on it? In the second of the five-part mini-series, featured creative team Christopher Hastings (Gwenpool, Vote Loki) and artist Irene Strychalsk (GwenpoolSilk) bring us what could only be described as what pink, fluffy, spider-y nightmares are made of.
